Tower No. 2 on September 25th, 2001.
The day after I returned to New York from Japan, I visited what was left of the World Trade Center. Fires were still burning and, for miles, the air still smelled. Today, more than two months later, fires are still burning and the smell is still there.
Then, like now, some of the destruction was visible. But more daunting than seeing what is left, is seeing what is no longer there, and trying to remember what was there.
Often, when I walk in the city, I find myself trying to remember if the towers were visible from where I stand. In many cases the answer is clearly yes, a sad reminder difficult to adjust to.
